It was a noble effort, but the timing was terrible. With the backing of Ernest Hemingway’s heirs, Hemingway Shoes launched its line of luxurious sporting shoes right in the depths of the recession. Made not in the Far East, but handsewn here in the Americas, the shoes are supremely comfortable and beautifully made from top-grain cowhide and authentic American buffalo — Papa would have been proud. But the challenge of creating a new brand selling $200 luxury loafers in the worst economy in 80 years proved daunting.
