Hear the thunder of hooves in "The Run for the Roses" as you pop the top off your favorite beverage with our unique Bottle Opener, made of reclaimed wood from the 1903 Churchill Downs paddock! Heavy-duty nickel-plated hardware is secured to a neat length of wood, hewn from the authentic wooden beams and trusses of the paddock, where prized thoroughbred horses were showcased and mounted before the Kentucky Derby, including Sir Barton. This Kentucky bred chestnut colt won the 1919 Kentucky Derby by five lengths and went on to become the first-ever Triple Crown winner! Although 1923 was the last year this paddock was used as such (a new one was built behind the clubhouse), it served different track functions over the course of the last 89 years. Recently, Churchill Downs planned to incorporate this structure into the second story "Grandstand Pavilion" but building codes made its use cost prohibitive, so it was carefully dismantled in 2013, with the wood transformed into these memorable keepsakes from this National Historic Landmark! Officially licensed by Churchill Downs Racetrack, each bottle opener is engraved "Churchill Downs Paddock 1903-1923" and comes nicely gift-boxed with a Certificate of Authenticity. Measures 6 1/2".
