I first came across this beautiful Leather Head football while reading the Wall Street Journal. Instantly, I was reminded of playing pick-up games in the field behind my house every Sunday in the fall, before I sat down to watch football all day with my father. I was thrilled this hand-crafted football was deliberately designed for a normal set of hands — instead of a 6' 4" NFL Quarterback! (Have you ever tried to throw a tight spiral with a regulation sized NFL football?!) So I took a trip down to Glen Rock, N.J. to see the process for myself, and to consider offering Leather Head in our catalog. Walking into the small shop, my nose was invited to the sweet aroma of high-quality leather, hand-selected from the finest American steerhides. Traditional tools and equipment that have been used for decades were scattered around the small shop. Instead of traditional footballs that use heavily processed leather to maintain uniformity, each Leather Head hide is simply dyed, leaving behind subtle imperfections that give life and texture to each football. The complete process takes 20 steps, starting with an old cutting press to form the panel shapes, then punching holes for the laces, then hand sewing the panels together. Next the ball is stretched to shape, the bladder inserted, and finally the rawhide laces are hand fed and cut. The resulting football is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece that will look stunning on display, but beg to be used! Over time the leather will age to a lustrous patina and become more tactile for better grip.
